Obituary for Ernest Barker

Ernest Barker
Ernest Warren Barker, 74, passed away peacefully at his home in Washington with his family by his side. He was born on April 28, 1938 in Boston, MA, the son of the late Warren and Muriel Calthorpe Barker. He grew up in Hartford and Andover. After school, he joined the Navy and was a member of the Seabees. He served as Active Duty from 1957 to 1961, and after his honorable discharge in 1961 continued to serve in the Naval Reserves until 1963. While in the Navy, he spent some time in Iceland which he thoroughly enjoyed. He was able to fly across the North Pole; a story he would tell often.

After his time in the service, he came home to Massachusetts and worked as a heavy equipment mechanic for Gibson Motors in Lawrence. While there, he was the supervisor for all of the heavy equipment jobs and would work on a variety of different projects including rewiring fire engines at Logan Airport. He moved to Atkinson, NH where he opened his own business as a free lance mechanic. In 1986 he and his wife, Nancy, retired to Washington, ME where the two began farming. On the property they raised sheep for 25 years. They started with Corriedale Sheep for both their wool and their meat. For the last 7 years, they raised Katahdin sheep for their meat. The couple also had greenhouses in which they would raise lettuce and herbs using the hydroponics process for over 20 years. They would sell their harvest to both local restaurants and stores. His latest hobby was beekeeping and currently had two hives that he was taking care of. It was something that he had always wanted to try his hand at and found that he was quite good at it.

He loved the ocean and being near the water. He always enjoyed the trips that he and Nancy would take to Gloucester where they would just sit along the wharf and take in the sights and sounds of their surroundings. He enjoyed fishing even though he did not get the opportunity to fish often. He led a very active life and was always busy.

He was a member of the South Hope Community Church, Navy Seabee Veterans of America, a past member of the American Legion, and a past member of the Greenhouse Growers Association.
