A Different Life

My brother Ed & myself came to live with Aunt Ginny & Uncle Cecil, at the tender ages of 4 and 9, end of the summer 1976. We were scared, unsure...had been living in a rough part of the city in Mass. But over the next 10+ years, we learned to be self sufficient, planting, harvesting gardens, deer hunting, plowing & shoveling our own property. We witnessed tons of love, committment to raising us..I will miss every new years eve, with faylene, Irene, my grandparents Lawrence & Mary French..coming over, staying well into early morning hours...Uncle Cecil having gone to bed before...but there was always love & laughter when family gathered here. Our most recent family gathering was when his brother in law Nick Parrett & wife Pat came to visit. Pat is Aunt Ginny's sister...but the family always came to the homestead. We would sit around the table n talk, laugh, share family happenings...I know he enjoyed the fellowship that took place in his home. His sisters when they got together there always made me laugh...Uncle Cecil taught my brother & I how to drive a snowmobile, how to be proud of a job well done, taught us values. When he worked for Williams Construction during my childhood, he would leave early in the am...if he saw a deer or a moose over in the somerville gravel pit, he would turn around, come back home just to tell Aunt Ginny so she could bundle us up, take us over to see. He might have been a man of few emotional words...but i cherish our talks of us, our kids, his great nieces N nephews who were more like grandchildren. His door has always been open to me...I will miss him, and the home that was so much more then a house...more then anyone can comprehend. The loss is staggering..thank you Uncle Cecil for making a difference in my life.
