Obituary for Harold Vail Webber

Harold Vail Webber
Harold V. Webber, 95, of West Southport, Maine, passed away peacefully March 16, 2015 at Maine General Hospital surrounded by loved ones. He was born on May 22, 1919 in West Southport, Maine, to George Webber and Carrie (Vail) Webber of West Southport, Maine.

Harold graduated from Boothbay Harbor High School in 1937. After marrying the love of his life, Phyllis Hart in 1940, they moved to Bath, Maine. He then went to work as a welder at Bath Iron Works, and he and Phyllis started their family. In 1944, Harold was called to serve in the Army, being initially stationed in Le Harve, France serving on the machine gun squad of the 87th Division. He also served in Germany and Czechoslovakia before the end of the war. Harold went on to earn the Bronze Star Medal in Germany, Combat Infantry Badge, European Theater of War Ribbon, and Good Conduct Medal. He was also recalled to join the Korean War effort being Honorably Discharged at the rank of Staff Sergeant.

Following his military service, Harold went on to work as a carpenter building houses, and into the boat building business at Boothbay area shipyards such as Brewer’s Boatyard and Norman Hodgdon Yacht Builders, which was later owned by Capt. Fish.

Harold was a proud and involved member of the Masons Seaside Lodge #144 and the Boothbay American Legion, regularly going to all the meetings and participating in the annual parades.

He was a history buff and read extensively. He was the subject in two of the books written by local author and historian, Sarah Sherman. As a movie fan, Harold enjoyed the films of John Wayne very much. He was also an avid hunter and loved snowmobiling.

Harold is survived by his daughter, Judith Webber of Port Orange, Florida and his son, Mark Webber, and his wife Sue Anderson, of Wiscasset. He is also survived by his grandson, Darrell Zwinge and his wife, Amy Yeager of Chesapeake Beach, Maryland, his granddaughter, Corrinne Zwinge Blank and her husband Lawrence of West Lebanon, New York, and by his granddaughter, Deidre Zwinge. He was predeceased by loving wife, Phyllis in 1990, and his son, Kenneth in 1944.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, March 22nd from 11:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Hall’s of Boothbay, 975 Wiscasset Road, Boothbay, Maine.

Hall’s of Boothbay has care of the arrangements. To extend online condolences, light a candle for Harold, or to share a story or pictures, visit Harold’s Book of Memories at www.hallfuneralhomes.com.
