The Model of Gratitude
Steve was a man of strong certainty and opinion. Yet he was a man of consistent gratitude. One time he and wife Mary drove a fair distance to my home in Deer Isle, Maine to join us in a large party. He was tugging on the top of his trousers and ultimately asked me if he could borrow a belt. I gave him a a used, inexpensive, rugged belt and told him to keep it.This improved his attitude and function. What was so memorable is he repeatedly thanked me most times he saw me. As if that was not enough, he later gave me an antique York grader for maintaining my hilly crushed stone driveway. What a gift! Telephone calls with Steve were always entertaining and stimulating, even when he was sick. He knew who he was and who I was and I shall always admire him. My deep sympathies to you Mary, your daughters and family. Bill Hawthorne
