Obituary for Waite Wadsworth Weston

Waite Wadsworth Weston
Waite Wadsworth Weston, 73, a life-long resident of Waldoboro, passed away peacefully at his home on March 8, 2014.
Born on September 5, 1940 in Portland, Maine, he was the only son of the late Kenneth K. Weston and late Rose D. Weston of Waldoboro. Waite grew up in town and graduated from Waldoboro High School in 1958.
He attended The University of Maine at Orono, graduating in 1962 with a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Engineering. At UMO, he joined the Navy ROTC and was a fraternity member of the Delta Tau Delta chapter.
After completing OCS, he served on the destroyers USS Beatty and the USS Gearing stationed out of Newport, RI. Ultimately, he obtained the rank of Lieutenant JG before receiving an Honorable Discharge from the Navy.
He married Mary W. Weston (nee Woodward) of Walpole in October of 1962. They were happily married for 44 years.
In 1966, he returned to Waldoboro to settle down and start a family. Waite and Mary have three children, Timothy S. Weston (of Waterville), Thomas C. Weston (of Philadelphia) and Tiffany A. Weston (of Philadelphia).
Waite joined his father (Ken Weston) in ownership of the family hardware business, S.H. Weston & Sons in downtown Waldoboro. The business had been started by Waite’s grandfather, Samuel Weston, in 1922 with his sons Kenneth and Lawrence eventually joining the operation.
For many years, Waite and Mary were fixtures in running the family business, especially after moving the store to the Route 1 location in 1978 and re-naming it Weston’s Hardware. They ran the store until their retirement in 2002. The store closed after an 80-year run.
Waite was an exceptionally hard worker and devoted family man. Waite enjoyed landscaping, boating, sporting events, class reunions, spending time with his grandchildren, extended family, friends and beloved dog.
He served as a M.S.A.D. 40 school-board member, member of the American Legion, Certified Master Plumber, past president of the New England Hardware Dealer’s Association in 1990, on the Board of Directors of the Waldoboro Savings and Loan, past president of the Board of Directors at the Waldoboro Bank, and recently, Treasurer of the German Protestant Society in Waldoboro.
Waite was predeceased by his wife Mary W. Weston in May 2006.
He is survived by his loving family: Wayne and Genie Cole (nee Woodward), Karin R. Weston (wife of Timothy), granddaughters Abigail S. Weston and Sofie A. Weston, David B. Hitt, Wilhelm and Ilse Pfander, Rob and Beth Cole, cousins, extended family and friends.
Friends are welcome to join the family for a time of gathering and remembrance on Thursday, March 13, 2014 from six until eight O’clock in the evening at Hall Funeral Home, 949 Main Street, Waldoboro, Maine.
A private service and remembrance for the family will be held later this summer. Burial will be in the German Protestant Cemetery in Waldoboro.
Should friends desire, donations can be made in Waite’s name to: German Protestant Society, PO Box 205, Waldoboro, Maine 04572-0205
