My heart broke to hear of Waite's passing. In 1975 I started to build my cottage in So Waldoboro. I worked for two weeks before having to return to the Boston area. In those two weeks, I think I came to the store on Main St. nearly every afternoon just before closing to buy the supplies I'd forgotten the previous day. After the third day, Waite offered me a store credit account. Coming from the 'big city', it was a lesson in Maine hospitality and good business. Every year after that, when I returned to Waldoboro in the Spring, I'd drop into the store and instantly be greeted by Waite from across the store not skipping a beat, saying, "Hi, Mike. How was your winter". Another lesson in Maine hospitality.
Waite and Mary ran a store and participated in community life in a style that enriched each of us who crossed their path. His loss leaves a big hole for me after these nearly 40 years.
